Parkes spent last year in the premier class of motorcycle racing, MotoGP, but much of the campaign was spent at the back of the field as his Paul Bird Motorsport team struggled to remain competitive.

The huge costs associated with MotoGP have buried the team in 2015, leaving Parkes without a ride. But the Hunter speed demon has landed on his feet, securing a plum position with Milwaukee Yamaha, alongside fellow Australian Josh Brookes.

Parkes helped launch the new Yamaha YZF-R1 in Italy on Wednesday evening and said he was looking forward to his new partnership with the Japanese manufacturer.

‘‘In the past I have had some great results with Yamaha, and to be a part of the project with the new R1 is a real privilege,’’ Parkes said.

‘‘There have already been a lot of good reports, so I am excited about 2015.’’

The rider faces a steep learning curve in the British championship as he works with a new bike and new tracks once again, but Parkes said he was up to the challenge.

‘‘The level of competition is really high in the championship. They are like world champions on their own tracks.

‘‘I know I have to learn them, but I want to do as much as I can before the season so I am in the best possible position.’’

The British Superbike season starts at Donington Park from April 4 to 6.
